Five women, strangers, attempt to form a book club. Jameson, “Beverly Hills gone bad”, has found a scrap of paper at a coffee shop with details of the meeting and shows up uninvited. The hostess of the night, Morgan, just wants a new group of friends (“kind of like the best parts of high school”). Wednesday Morning (“It’s a family name”) arrives with stacks of rules and regulations – she’s had to quit six book clubs because they “talked about feelings, not books!” Carolina, a subscriber to five online dating services and caustic to the core, provides shock value while Amy, (“Yep, I’m fat”) tries to convince the group how much she loves her body.
The women discuss a real book. In the first episode, it’s Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. But, talk of the book get waylaid by personal disclosures and conflicts. There are flashback glimpses into lives quite different than what is presented to the group. As these five women move through discussions and personal interactions, the question remains – can they create a successful tradition that’s been replicated and cherished by hundreds of thousands of women around the world? A comedy/drama, Book Club is the perfect combination of entertainment with a juicy bite of reality. It’s an opportunity for women to see themselves in the reflection of a journey of friendship formed through circumstance.
